According to the information obtained from the Federal Communications Commission, to connect with billions of people who are still offline.
Facebook will start working on a low earth orbit internet satellite which is a gold standard of a good internet connection. The emails received from FCC revealed that the satellite would be named ‘Athena’ and will have experience an official launch as early as 2019, the Wired reported.
The social network has made big investments in bringing a new satellite that will offer broadband internet connections to “unserved and underserved areas.” However, Facebook is not the only one who is focusing to increase Internet accessibility through satellites in low earth orbit, but Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Softbank-backed OneWeb are the two names having similar ambitions.
The biggest hurdle for Facebook would be determining whether people who they are aiming to serve would want to pay for the internet service.
“While we have nothing to share about specific projects at this time, we believe satellite technology will be an important enabler of the next generation of broadband infrastructure, making it possible to bring broadband connectivity to rural regions where Internet connectivity is lacking or non-existent,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying in a statement.
