The HEC organized a meeting of the working group of 15 universities in Pakistan to deliberate on the Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Ranking. The meeting was held on World Environment Day 2018 on Tuesday.
The meeting was held to draw the attention of Pakistani universities to reevaluate their policies in light of the threat of global climate change. The meeting bore fruit as it was agreed upon to organize a National Workshop with the the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking on July 9, 2018. All the universities in Pakistan will be invited to participate. The meeting was chaired by the Executive Director of the HEC, Dr. Arshad Ali as well as other senior officers at the HEC and Dr. Manzoor Soomro, President of the Economic Cooperation Organisation Science Foundation (ECOSF).
The meeting decided that a Green Office will be set up at the HEC Headquarters to coordinate with the different universities in the country. Dr. Arshad hoped that this initiative would help shine a light and bear solutions to extreme climate catastrophes that have befallen Pakistan including the severe water shortage.
Dr. G. Raza Bhatti, Member, Planning and Operations HEC voiced his hope that the Green Office would also warn students about the dangers of plastic use which would in turn influence families around Pakistan to stop the use of plastic.
