The Lahore High Court has asked Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to keep a check on Facebook’s possible influence on the upcoming elections in Pakistan.
The decision was taken by the LHC judge, Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh, while hearing a petition on Facebook’s influence on general elections.
The general elections are scheduled to be held on July 25, 2018, and the high court wants to restrict the spread of fake news or propaganda through social media, therefore it issued such directives for PTA.
Facebook has been extensively used over the years to influence public opinions, and it recently came under harsh criticism for doing so.
The petition was filed before LHC by Shahid Jamal who requested the court to urge media regulatory bodies to reach out to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in order to get rid of the fake accounts problem before the election day.
The interim federal government, ECP and PTA should also be directed to regulate social media to ensure the democratic process is not harmed in the upcoming general elections, the petitioner said.
