In last couple of years, Pakistan has gone through the big change in telecommunications industry. With the introduction of 3G/4G spectrums in 2014, there have been a drastic shift from voice services to usage of data/broadband. Syed Ismail Shah, Chairman of PTA expressed his views after addressing the ICT4 conference at ITCN Asia 2016.
For years, there was a demand by customer-base for the implementation of 3G/4G technologies in Pakistan. He talked about how the introduction of new spectrum has helped businesses find new ground and helped integration of foreign companies in Pakistan. He gave examples of Careem and Uber and how mobile data has helped these companies to serve in Pakistan. Transformation to 3G/4G spectrum has been a positive step for the better economy of Pakistan but there is grave need to spread the services to rural areas.
Besides the metropolitan cities and few cities and villages around the mega cities, there is no proper infrastructure in far away areas and investments need to be done so the rural areas could be enabled with these technologies.
He also gave examples how mobile internet has benefited villages where service is available. It has given children to access educational services where proper school facilities are not available. It has also empowered women to do business from their home and allowed farmers to stay up to date with news and information for the betterment of their crop.
